Chapter Seventeen

Max

Max pulled off his apron and dropped it in the dirty linens bin in the kitchen. He was about to leave when Pippen called out, "Maybe next time come back from your break on time," to his back. He didn't sound mad and hadn't said a word about Max's tardiness the entire rest of his shift so Max knew what it really meant. "I'm watching you. I'm paying attention to you." Max sighed. Normally he would just be really boring for a few days. But with Berlin around, he didn't think that was possible.

You should have sent him back, Max thought. Then, an even darker thought occurred to him. You paid for the week, he should do what you tell him to. He felt nauseous after that. He hadn't paid for Berlin's services, he'd paid for his safety and for extra time to figure out how to get him out of the situation he was in. He didn't have to end up with Max, though his wolf howled at the thought of him ending up with anyone else, but he would find a life that was safe, doing something that was safe and that he enjoyed. Far away from unwanted drugs and anyone who would hurt him.

Max practically skipped across the parking lot. He was sure Berlin had snooped, despite his instructions. He wouldn't have found anything incriminating, except for maybe the closet, but he could just say he had dog sat for a friend or something.

The most likely thing would be that he would come back to Berlin bored out of his mind. Max had television, but the most basic cable package that the building already came with. He didn't have any video games or movies. Though, he did have a stack of books in his kitchen somewhere. He'd picked them up out of a free bin sometime a few weeks before.

He ignored the urge to knock on his own door and opened it, stepping inside slowly. "Berlin?" he called out and then felt like a fool. He was either still there or he wasn't, calling out his name wouldn't change anything.

But, when he saw the man's soft red curls, his pale face and pretty smile, Max exhaled slowly. This felt too great. Too right. Coming home after a long day at work with his man here, barefoot and waiting.

"Hey," he said softly from the door way.

Berlin took the remaining steps to bring them together. He slipped his arms around Max's neck and reached up on his tip toes so he could kiss him hello. "I wish I had a martini for you," Berlin said, having come up with the same fantasy as Max had.

"I'm not a vodka man," Max replied.

Berlin made a face. "I can tell. You are clearly a whiskey guy."

"I never said I didn't have my vices," Max replied.

"Oh, I know, and I am not about to judge you for something you like to do, but maybe you should have your liver checked out, just to be sure.
